Twenty years ago, MicroKote G was developed by a dedicated team at Swedev, with Mats Björkegren as part of the group. The team’s combined understanding of customer needs and drive for innovation helped create a doctor blade that revolutionized printing performance. This commitment to quality established MicroKote G as a trusted leader in the market, known for its reliability and efficiency. As we celebrate its 20th anniversary, Mats reflects on the product’s origins, its success over the years, and the team’s vision for the future. In his own words, Mats shares insights on MicroKote G’s journey, its industry impact, and the ongoing innovation driving its continued success.

How did the idea for Microkote G come about?

The idea for MicroKote G emerged from customer feedback, where users observed that the original MictoKote blade required a break-in period before achieving optimal print results. Once it settled in, the blade performed exceptionally well and had a long lifespan. The issue stemmed from a Nickel surface layer used in production to remove unevenness, which caused the blade not to scrape completely clean from the start. To address this, we focused on minimizing the Nickel layer, ultimately resolving the break-in problem. As a result, the blade’s surface took a slight gray hue, leading to its initial name, MicroKote Gray – later shortened to MicroKote G.

When did you realize that Microkote G would become a very popular blade?

The success of MicroKote G didn’t happen overnight. Early on, there were no guarantees, but we knew we had developed something unique. With time, we perfected it, and sales steadily grew – continuing to thrive to this day.

What do you think are the most important factors behind the blade's 20-year success?

The success of MicroKote G over 20 years can be attributed to several key factors. One of the most important is that the blade is “press ready,” meaning it works perfectly from the very first meter. It has excellent wear resistance, ensuring it lasts for the entire print job, while maintaining consistent and high quality—something we like to call “Consistency through Quality.”

Do you remember any particular feedback you’ve received?

There’s one piece of feedback that has stuck with me over the years. A new manager for a printing press in Poland was using a competitor’s blade but contacted our distributor because he wanted MicroKote G. He explained that he needed the blade so he could, in his own words, “sleep well at night.”

“Celebrating the 20th anniversary of MicroKote G means a lot to me. It’s proof that this product is fantastic—still competitive after all these years—and that it continues to help users achieve perfect results. I take pride in its quality, knowing that it holds up against any competitor.”

How has Microkote G evolved over 20 years?

Over the past two decades, we have expanded our machinery and fine-tuned our production process, which has allowed us to refine the product even further. While MicroKote G has been enhanced over the years, its core concept remains unchanged.

How do you see the future for Microkote G?

Looking ahead, we will continue to develop both the product and the production process. This is essential to keep MicroKote G competitive, and we hope it will continue to serve the industry for many years to come.
